Children’s Discovery Room

The Williamstown Historical Museum is a place for the entire family!

In addition to a booklet for parents to help their children explore our exhibits’ various sections and interactive activities, our Children’s Discovery Room is a dedicated space for kids to explore.

Children can play with toys from another era, such as cup and ball, whirligig, game of graces, wooden tops, flip books, cornhusk dolls, paper dolls with period clothing, mechanical banks, and hoops-and-sticks. They can also read children’s books from the 1800s, dress up in historically accurate period clothing (complete with tricorn hats and wooden canteens for the boys, and drawers, corsets, petticoats, aprons, and bonnets along with dresses for the girls), and sit at authentic, wooden school desks and complete work from historic lesson books using old-fashioned slates. You will definitely want to bring a camera!

At their parents’ discretion, children ages six and up can immerse themselves in the past while parents explore the museum in greater depth. Children learn by doing! In the Discovery Room, they can explore an era before their contemporary life.
